Jonathan Rhodes ’09 is leading the Louisiana Civil Justice Center, a disaster-focused civil legal aid organization in New Orleans. Following the hurricanes in the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, the LCJC is busy at work. Most of the calls getting through to the LCJC are from the U.S. Virgin Islands and deal with matters mostly related to emergency family law and landlord-tenant issues. They expect to see a higher volume of calls from Puerto Rico when the power returns to the island.

In memoriam: Robert David Eatman '81

Robert Eatman '81, a prominent broadcast talent agent whose clients included Mancow Muller, Opie and Anthony, Drex, Rover and other current and former Chicago radio personalities. Eatman died Sunday of cancer at 65. A Chicago native and graduate of Chicago Kent School of Law, he represented AFTRA, SAG and other performers unions before forming his own talent agency in 1991. “Bob took me from $70,000 a year when nobody else saw anything in me and made me one of the top radio personalities in America,” Muller recalled. “Eatman made the difference.” Robert graduated from Chicago-Kent College of Law in 1981 and received the Alumni of Distinction award in 2013. Chicago-Kent alum, Stephen Vertucci, ’02, recently started his own law firm, The Law Firm of Stephen Vertucci, LLC. Located in Fort Collins, Colorado, his firm focuses on family law issues. Specifically, Mr. Vertucci’s firm focuses on complex issues within family law such as child custody, child support, divorce, and spousal maintenance. At Chicago-Kent, he developed a passion for advocating for clients’ rights in the courtroom; he went on to learn effective trial techniques, cross-examination strategies, and crafting effective courtroom presentations. Upon graduating, Mr. Vertucci worked with some of the most highly regarded family law attorneys in Chicago, where he further honed his talent and passion for working in family law. Mr. Vertucci also worked as a criminal prosecutor in Arizona for several years before moving to Colorado and beginning this firm. 

TorHoerman Law Doubled Their Success And Gave Away 1,000 Turkeys To Madison County Families In Annual Thanksgiving Give Away

TorHoerman Law increased their outreach these holidays and gave away 1,000 turkeys in November 2016. This year marked the third year that TorHoerman partnered with local sponsors to help residents in Alton and Granite City, Illinois. Last year, the law firm, which has strong ties to Madison County, was able to provide 500 turkeys to families in need.  The turkeys were distributed based on a first come, first serve basis. Alton Mayor Brant Walker commented that "It is tremendous that the law firm comes to help out the less fortunate." Tor Hoerman and Jessica (Paluch) Hoerman are both 1995 graduates of Chicago-Kent. Peter G. Karahalios '76 Appointed to the Illinois Court of Claims

Governor Bruce Rauner has appointed Peter G. Karahalios '76 to the Illinois Court of Claims. Peter brings 40 years of experience as an attorney in both the private and public sectors to the bench. Currently, Peter is the Chief Legal Counsel and Sworn Deputy Treasurer in the Cook County Treasurer's Office. He oversees the compliance of state statutes and county ordinances on real estate tax collection and coordinates litigation with the Cook County State's Attorney and U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. Peter has held this position since 2007. It's a return to the Cook County Treasurer's Office because he previously worked there from 1998-2003 as the Chief of Staff and Sworn Chief Deputy Treasurer. Peter has worked in private practice, as well.

Elizabeth, who has been a DuPage County associate judge since 1996, will lead the courtroom for two years.

Peter Birnbaum '83Governor Bruce Rauner has appointed Peter J. Birnbaum '83, president and CEO, Attorneys’ Title Guaranty Fund, Inc., as chief justice of the Illinois Court of Claims. Peter has served as a judge on the Court since 2004.

Peter is a past president of the Chicago-Kent College of Law Alumni Board of Directors and current member of the Board of Overseers. He was honored with a Distinguished Service Award from the college in 2004. In 2013, he was named one of the college’s 125 Alumni of Distinction for his outstanding professional and community service achievements.

Chicago-Kent All Over Takeda $2.4 Billion Pharmaceutical Settlement

Chicago-Kent was all over the Takeda $2.4 billion pharmaceutical settlement - one of the largest in history! Tor Hoerman '95 and Allen Schwartz '84 represented the plaintiffs, Sherry Knutson Vaughn '96 represented the defendants, and Hon. Deborah Mary Dooling '78 presided over the case.

The settlement compensates plaintiffs who alleged that their use of Takeda's drug, Actos, resulted in diagnosis of bladder cancer.  This settlement was the single largest mass tort settlement for a drug still on the market, and covers an estimated 9,200 cases, including future cases not yet filed.

Amy Campanelli '87The Cook County Board on Wednesday, April 1 approved the nomination of Amy P. Campanelli '87 as the new county public defender after County Board President Toni Preckwinkle nominated her last month for a six-year term.

Campanelli has worked in the office as an assistant public defender for 23 years, most recently as its deputy of suburban operations. She is the second woman to lead the office in its 84-year history.

Rossana Fernandez '96 is First Latina Cook County Circuit Judge Appointed by IL Supreme Court

The Illinois Supreme Court appointed Rossana P. Fernandez '96 to be a Cook County circuit judge. She is filling the vacancy created by the death of Richard Elrod, and her term will expire on December 5, 2016.

Rossana said she is “humbled and honored beyond belief” to be the first Latina appointed by the high court as a circuit judge and called it a ‘dream come true.’ “This is the start of something amazing. I pledge to serve the citizens of Cook County to the best of my ability,” she added.
