What were you like as a law student?
I was a non-traditional law student: older and a single parent with a full-time job. I was no-nonsense and very studious. However, I extended myself to help other students and mentor them. I wanted to help other students be successful.
How did Chicago-Kent prepare you for your present success?
Chicago-Kent provided me the foundation of the legal knowledge I needed to run the second largest court system in the country. The law school helped broaden my perspective as a person and my understanding of how important the law is to our nation’s history. At Chicago-Kent, I also gained a greater appreciation for justice. The law school helped me learn, intellectually, how to run a legal system and personally, how to serve people with fairness and compassion.
What was the greatest challenge you have faced in your career? How did you overcome it?
The greatest challenge has been overcoming the stereotypical and limited view that society has attributed to my race, gender, and impoverished economic background. It is an ongoing challenge, but I do not use the discrimination I face as a crutch or perceive it as a weakness. I deal with this challenge by always being prepared, being educated, and having strong faith and confidence in my abilities.
What advice would you give to young attorneys just starting out today?
I would advise young attorneys to be true to their profession, but foremost, be true to yourself. I would tell them to never compromise their standards. Additionally, I would counsel young attorneys to respect themselves, their colleagues, and maintain their integrity of the law profession.
Who is your favorite US Supreme Court Justice (living or deceased)?
My favorite US Supreme Court Justice is the late Thurgood Marshall, the 96th Justice and first African American, who sat on the Supreme Court from 1967-1991. Before he became a Justice, Marshall was the lawyer best known for achieving victory, after the death of his mentor, Charles Hamilton Houston, in the Brown v. Board of Education Case, which desegregated schools in the U.S.
What does it mean to you to be one of Chicago-Kent’s 125 Alumni of Distinction?
It is a tremendous honor. It’s also very humbling for me given the school’s illustrious history and the stature and outstanding accomplishments of its alumni. I am proud to participate in a legacy of excellence, and this recognition further inspires me to live up to the high values and ideals set by this great institution.
