Chicago-Kent Patent Hub Sponsorship Opportunities

In cooperation with the US Patent & Trademark Office, Chicago-Kent established a Pro Bono Patent Hub for Illinois in 2015.  Through the Patent Hub, individuals and small businesses throughout Illinois who fall below a certain financial threshold can bring inventions to the Hub to determine if the inventions can be patented. The Patent Hub matches the inventor with an appropriate volunteer patent attorney who will attempt to patent the invention, in many cases with the assistance of a Chicago-Kent IP law student.

Benefits of the Chicago-Kent Patent Hub

  • Offers patent lawyers an opportunity to provide pro bono service within their expertise;
  • Presents associates with pro bono learning opportunities;
  • Provides real world patent practice experience for students interested in patent Law as a practice area;
  • Promotes small business growth and entrepreneurism;
  • Educates low income inventors and small businesses about the patent process; and
  • Eliminates financial hurdles that may prohibit inventors from patenting or bringing new ideas to the marketplace.

Impact of the Chicago-Kent Patent Hub

Since its inception in 2015 to May 2017, the Chicago-Kent Patent Hub received inquiries from 334 inventors. Following a thorough screening process, the Patent Hub placed 68 inventors with volunteer attorneys from 18 law firms who each agree to take the inventor from patent application to final action by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.  Thirty five non-provisional patent applications have been filed.
